Let the Word Lead

Updated: 2 days ago

Key Truth: God’s Word does not merely support our pursuit; God’s Word must direct our pursuit.

Scripture Anchor:

Psalm 119:105

James 1:22

Consider This: At the close of the Pursue Conference, I shared, “If the Word does not govern your pursuit, something else will.” We can love God sincerely and still let our emotions, wounds, preferences, fears, or others' opinions determine the direction of our pursuit. Many things may influence how we feel, but only God’s Word should have the authority to determine how we live.

Psalm 119 does not describe the Word as a floodlight revealing the entire journey at once. It is a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. God often gives enough light for the step in front of us, then asks us to trust Him with what we cannot yet see. Pursuing God’s Word means resisting the demand to know every detail before we obey what He has already made clear.

The Word also exposes false confidence. James warns that hearing without doing can create self-deception. We may mistake familiarity with Scripture for faithfulness to Scripture. Knowing the verse is not the same as allowing the verse to govern our response. During the Conference, I shared what my Spiritual Mom, Rev. Yvonne Lee shared: “Hearing changes your mind. Obeying changes your life.” The transforming power of the Word becomes visible when Word moves from the page into our choices.

Reflection Questions:

  • What has been governing your decisions lately: God’s Word, your emotions, fear, pressure, or convenience?

  • What instruction from Scripture do you already understand, but have not yet practiced?

  • Where might God be asking you to trust the light He has given instead of demanding the full map?

Application:

  1. Choose one decision you are currently facing. Write down the emotions and opinions surrounding it.

  2. Find one Scripture that speaks directly to the decision. Read it slowly in context.

  3. Complete this sentence: “Because God’s Word says ______, my next faithful step is ______.”

  4. Take that step within the next 24 hours.

Prayer:  Father, thank You for giving me a Word that is trustworthy, living, and able to guide me. Forgive me for the times I have allowed fear, feelings, wounds, or other voices to govern my pursuit. Teach me to recognize Your truth, receive it with humility, and respond with obedience. I do not need the entire map when I have Your light for my next step. Order my steps in Your Word and let my life demonstrate that I believe what You have spoken. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Closing Declaration: God’s Word governs my pursuit. His truth lights my path, corrects my thinking, and directs my next step. I will not be a hearer only. I will obey what God has spoken.
